From the queen of gothic romantasy, Rachel Gillig, One Dark Window is the dark, mist-cloaked tale of a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom—but the monster in her head isn't the only threat lurking.
Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.
Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom she calls home—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.
But nothing comes for free, especially magic.
When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure the kingdom of the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King’s own nephew, Captain of the Destriers...and guilty of high treason.
He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

Short and sweet while hitting all the romantasy checkboxes. The world is gothic and moody and the magic system is so different than anything I’ve read before, I loved how refreshing that was. The twists are twisty and will keep you turning pages. I think my favorite part was how my opinion of the villain changed, I did not even know it was happening until it happened. Very clever, Rachel Gillig, very sneaky. Definitely add this incredible duology to your TBR, you won’t regret it.
Oh boy. This one is hard for me because I made a terrible mistake Audiobook-ing book 1 in this duology instead of eyeball reading. It essentially ruined this series for me. Kind of. I can appreciate all of the amazing things everyone says about it – the beautiful writing, gothic world building, cool and unique magic system but man oh man, I cannot think about it without being super annoyed and it bums me out.
If you want a really unique duology, a cool premise, beautiful writing, lovable characters (albeit very low spice) -pick this one up – especially in the Fall season! But BEWARE of the Audiobook version if you have any ick with voices like me. 🥴
