-- Life in the perilous Thorn district is a constant battle for Arvelle and her younger brothers.

Faced with an unthinkable choice, Arvelle makes a magically binding vow to do the impossible: kill the emperor, an ancient vampire created by the god Umbros.

But first, she must enter the Sundering -- an arena where only the fastest, strongest, and deadliest survive long enough to be selected for the emperor's elite guard.

As stakes rise and secrets emerge, she quickly draws the ire of the Primus, the powerful figure charged with protecting the emperor -- while also finding herself depending on the enemy to hone her power... the emperor's vampiric son.

To survive the arena and complete her mission, Arvelle must uncover a deadly conspiracy that will change everything she thought she knew about herself -- and the two vampires who are deeply entwined with her destiny.

Spoiler-Free Review

The hype is real, friends! This was un-put-downable. I immediately loved it out of the gates and my notes after finishing it include 1,000 exclamation points because SO.MANY.FUN.TWISTS come barreling at you in the last 10%!

Arvelle is our FMC and she's mouthy, impulsive and a trained killer, so of course I love her. There is OBVIOUSLY more to the story with Tiernon, her first love that goes slumming in the Thorn and then disappears. And Rorrick is going to devastate me, I CAN ALREADY TELL. Just bring it on. This is queued up be emotional blackmail and I am here for it!

The writing did feel rushed at times and some major events were glossed over at times. I also get tired of a cagey MMC, it's a cheap trick to make us hate a character just because he won't divulge information.

I had to sit on this review for awhile because I'm still so confused on my feelings about it. Which isn't a bad thing, but also, isn't a good thing. ;) IYKYK

I ended on a 4/5 because I'm excited for where I'm hoping this will go in the next few books in the series. I think when I step back and look at book 1 I DO really like it. It has all the things we love in a Romantasy book but I think my issue is the love triangle. It's done VERY well but without spoiling it - I don't like it and it gives me the ick. I'm hoping Stacia can change my mind because I did love the characters - especially the FMC Arvelle. She's the best kind of badass FMC and I'm excited to see where this takes her. Girlfriend deserves a HEA!
